Shortly after the Berlin Wall fell, Carmen moved quickly to lead a PBS news crew to Eastern Europe to produce the hour documentary, A Brave New World. She was senior producer, reporter and host for the documentary.
After digesting months of research, weeks of interviews and tons of footage, Carmen wrote, narrated and edited the documentary. It showed how after 40 years of communist control, the people of Eastern Europe declared, "Communism doesn't work. We must start again." Those young democracies were looking to the West for economic and moral support, but what kind of opportunities or obstacles were there? Would the West be able to pull those crumbling economies into the competitive global market? |

"The communist work ethic is well defined in Carmen Roberts' special report tonight on Eastern Europe. 'We pretend to work, they pretend to pay us.' This documentary, A Brave New World, is a good, solid report on the economic problems facing Eastern Europe now that the Iron Curtain has been lifted." - Walt Belcher, TV Critic, Tampa Tribune |
Weeks of relentless shooting through three former communist countries generated some incredible video and priceless interviews that captured the hope and hesitation of the moment. Through Carmen's reporting, viewers saw tiny cars rumble over 100-year-old cobblestone streets, watched smokestacks of old factories fill the skies with pollution, and felt the frustration of people who feared losing their jobs in the free marketplace.
Yet they also saw the excitement of new entrepreneurs eager to do business with the West, and experienced the spirit of the people who demanded freedom, a better life and a chance to join the rest of the world. The documentary was greeted with accolades from business leaders, teachers, programmers, journalists, and television critics.
